The Two Streams

“Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?” James 3:11

Every Bible on the shelf descends from one of two streams of copies, and the two do not carry the same water. One flows from Antioch through the churches to the King James Bible. The other sits in Alexandria, surfaces in the 1800s, and feeds every modern version. Trace both. Then weigh the witnesses.

“Yea, hath God said… which words? The copies differ. The originals are lost. Be reasonable: trust the oldest manuscripts, and the scholars trained to weigh them.”

How the question is asked on this front

Fair enough. Let us be exactly that reasonable, and do the two things any honest inquiry does with competing testimony. First, trace the chain of custody: where did each line of text come from, who carried it, and what was it doing for eighteen centuries? Second, count the witnesses: not two categories called “oldest” and “everything else,” but the actual tally. Both answers fit on one page. Touch any stone in the chart for its story.

The Originals

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God” (2 Timothy 3:16). Penned by apostles and prophets, read in the churches, and copied from the first day (Colossians 4:16).

From AD 45

Antioch

“The disciples were called Christians first in Antioch” (Acts 11:26).

The sending church of Paul's journeys, and the crossroads the letters passed through on their way to everywhere else. Here the scriptures were received not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God (1 Thessalonians 2:13), and treated accordingly: read aloud, copied for the next church, worn out in use, and copied again. This stream's habit was multiplication.

2nd–15th centuries

The Majority Text

Roughly nine of every ten Greek manuscripts known carry this stream's readings.

No council imposed this text and no committee edited it. Copies made in different centuries, in different countries, by scribes who never met, agree with each other on a massive scale. That is not coincidence; that is what a stream in continuous use looks like. The manuscripts are late for the same reason your family Bible is not two thousand years old: books that are read get worn out and replaced.

1516–1598

The Received Text

Erasmus, then Stephanus, then Beza set the majority stream in print.

The printing press meets the stream, and the Reformation follows it. Luther translated from it. Tyndale died for translating it. Every Protestant Bible of the era stands on it. It earned the name Textus Receptus: the text received by all. Rome's answer to it was not a better manuscript; it was the stake, and later, a rival text.

1526–1560

The English river

Tyndale, Coverdale, Matthew's, Great, Geneva, Bishops': the stream learns English.

Tyndale promised a plough boy would know more scripture than the clergy, and paid for it: strangled and burned in 1536, praying “Lord, open the King of England's eyes.” Within seventy-five years the answer arrived. Seven English Bibles, each refining the last, like silver purified seven times (Psalm 12:6). The Sevens page counts what came seventh.

The King James Bible

Forty-seven translators, six companies, seven years, every word weighed in open committee.

Four centuries without revision of substance, printed by anybody, owned by nobody, and carried by every generation since. The stream that began at the apostles' pens is still flowing, and you can hold it in your hand tonight. It even counts itself: 823,543 words the simplest way possible, exactly 7⁷.

The Stream of Doubt

2nd–4th centuries

Alexandria

Capital of philosophy and allegory, where scripture was handled as literature to correct.

The city of Philo, who blended Moses with Plato, and of the catechetical school, where Origen treated the text as raw material for scholarship. Alexandria appears in the Book itself, and instructively: its brightest son, Apollos, mighty in the scriptures, still had to be taken aside and taught the way of God more perfectly (Acts 18:24–26). “Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2 Timothy 3:7).

Codex Vaticanus

Beautiful, expensive, and in suspiciously excellent condition.

Missing the entire book of Revelation, Hebrews from 9:14 onward, and the pastoral epistles. Its pages are pristine for the reason unread books stay pristine. First catalogued on a Vatican Library shelf in 1475, which means 1,125 years pass between its copying and its first appearance in the record. Full rap sheet on Front II.

Codex Sinaiticus

Retrieved at a Sinai monastery; by Tischendorf's own account, its first leaves sat in a basket of parchments destined for the fire.

Its New Testament includes the apocryphal Shepherd of Hermas and Epistle of Barnabas, and its pages carry corrections from later hands numbering in the thousands upon thousands. In 1933 the Soviet government sold it to the British Museum for £100,000. In the four Gospels alone it disagrees with Vaticanus 3,036 times (Hoskier, Codex B and Its Allies, 1914). These are the two witnesses said to agree on the true text.

400s–1800s

The dry bed

Fourteen centuries with no flow. Nobody copies this text; no church uses it. A stream nobody drinks from is not a stream. It is standing water.

1881

Westcott & Hort

Two Cambridge scholars crown the two codices and displace the Received Text in a generation.

Hort's mind was made up early. At twenty-three, before his textual labors began, he wrote to John Ellerton of “that vile Textus Receptus” and called it “villainous” (December 1851; Life and Letters of Hort, vol. 1). The theory followed the verdict: whatever the two codices read is “neutral,” and the thousands of witnesses against them are dismissed as one late vote. The Revised Version of 1881 was the first fruit.

The critical text & its versions

Nestle-Aland, twenty-eight editions and counting. NIV, ESV, NASB drink here; the NKJV's margin points here.

A text still under revision after 140 years, its readings now adjusted by computer-assisted method, its editors openly unsure the original words are recoverable at all. Every few years the “assured results” are revised, and the versions follow. The reader is not given a settled Book. He is given a subscription to a project.

“But many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together” (Mark 14:56). The Book already taught you what to do with witnesses who contradict each other three thousand times: weigh them accordingly. Against them stands a cloud of witnesses five thousand strong, agreeing across centuries and continents. The modern position asks you to believe the two are right, the five thousand are wrong, and the God who promised to preserve his words let them sit in a vault and a wastebasket for fourteen hundred years. That is not textual science. That is Genesis 3:1 with an apparatus.

What saith the Scripture

It is written.

“For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.” Psalm 119:89

“For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.” Psalm 100:5

“For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: but the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.” 1 Peter 1:24–25

“To all generations” is stream language. Preservation, as God describes it, is not a rescue performed by a German scholar in 1844; it is water that never stopped reaching the people, generation after generation, so that no century of believers was left without the words. Only one of the two streams on this page even claims that history. The other one's own defenders date its revival to a library shelf and a wastebasket. The promise was continuity. The gold stream is what continuity looks like.
