First witness set
“And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.”

Second witness set
Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, then Syriac, Latin, German. Count them: when the Bible came into English, it was written in its seventh language. Hover each tongue for its story.
English is the seventh language the Bible was written in. That fact by itself does not name the 1611; the other witnesses on this page do that. But it tells you which tongue to watch.
And mark the tongue itself. In 1611 English was a young language, spoken by perhaps five million souls on one island at the edge of Europe, of little weight in trade, diplomacy, or scholarship. The learned world wrote in Latin, and no one choosing a language for the ages would have chosen English.
Four centuries later, English is the most widely understood language on Earth: the tongue of commerce and science, of the air and the sea lanes, spoken or studied by a quarter of the living world. God's words came to rest in a small island tongue that was about to go everywhere.

Third witness set
Psalm 12:6 promises words purified seven times. Count the great printed English Bibles that led to 1611.

Fourth witness set
From the first printing to the settled text, the road runs through exactly seven landmarks, 1611 to 1769.
“As silver tried in a furnace of earth.” What burned away was the printer's dross: misprints, spelling, italics; the greater refinements came in 1629, 1638, 1762, and 1769. The words themselves stood. Out of the furnace came the settled text this whole site measures against.
Fifth witness · discovered October 2023
One more witness, written into the Book's own arithmetic: the Elton Anomaly.

Count everything needed to print a King James Bible: every word of the settled Cambridge text and every number that orders it, from the five words of its title to the last verse number in Revelation, with no printer-specific additions. In October 2023 a researcher named Elton did exactly that. The total is precisely seven to the seventh power. Verified digitally the same day, and by hand count since.
No committee planned this. The 1611 translators did not number their own totals, and the text settled into its standard form generations before anyone thought to count it. The Book that promises words purified seven times counts itself to seven, seven times over.
